A Legacy of Faith. A Future of Hope.

Matthew "Mateo" Henderson

"I didn't pray about it, I just said 'Sign me up.'"

In 2000, a friend asked Matt to go on a Short-Term Missions Trip.  Having just lost his wife to cancer and being left with 3 small children, Matt wanted to get away, so he signed up for the trip.  Matt would have never guessed the calling that God was placing on his life through this 1 week trip.

Matt fell in love with people in the DR and seeing the many, many needs he knew he wanted to do more for the Haitians and the Dominicans in the Dominican Republic.

"If I die tomorrow, I know what a great life I've lived."

Before Matt's passing, he and his wife Jenn told the story of Hope for Hispaniola, God's goodness in grief, and the comitment to building God's kingdom.

"I think my gift is getting people involved."

1. The Henderson Kids

Matt took his 3 children, Max, Wade, and Gracie to spend a month at a time while homeschooling them in the DR. His children joined him on many of the trips he led from the founding of HFH to his passing.

2. Jenn Henderson

Jenn met Matt in 2003 and it was love at first sight. They were married in 2004, then took the kids to the DR to prepare for the group that would come.

3. Early Mission Partners

After talking to several Godly, mission minded people, Chris Palmer, Barb and Dave English, Mark Helgerman, Sam Hovis, Gene DeSabato and Scott Painter (with Matt in Glory) Hope For Hispaniola was born!

4. Jake Vincik

Jake joined Matt on a trip to the DR in 2011. On that trip, God led him to consider full time ministry in the DR. He worked alongside Matt to build HFH into what it is today.

"I can tell many stories of things that happened through missions that blessed me."

Matt’s heart was so full of Love and Compassion for the impoverished Haitians and Dominicans in the Dominican Republic. Although Matt is with the Lord, HFH will continue to carry out Matt’s passion and legacy by Serving and Supporting the Dominicans and Haitians in whatever specific needs they have.

"A lot of people are afraid to go, but everyone should go on a short term missions trip."

Short term missions work changed Matt's life, and continues to change the lives of those who participate in trips with Hope for Hispaniola.

"The entire road has been widened because the neighbors are excited to see what we're doing."

From encountering a pastor in La Higuera to leading the efforts for the Hope for Hispaniola Missions Center, Matt led the growth of Hope for Hispaniola from one short term trip to multiple trips to a permenant presence in the country.

Matt passed away from ALS in April 2025, but his work continues.

While he is no longer with us, the Lord has carried on the work of his faithful servant. As we seek to carry on the work he began, we follow his mantra every step of the way. "God bless you"

What Is the Matthew "Mateo" Legacy Fund?

The Matt Henderson Legacy Fund was established to carry forward a legacy of Christ-centered compassion by equipping local churches throughout the Dominican Republic to serve those who are hurting and most vulnerable.

Through this fund, local churches are empowered to share the hope of the Gospel while providing practical care and support to broken and hurting women, vulnerable children, and the elderly. The fund helps equip pastors and church leaders with the resources, training, and ministry support they need to bring healing, restoration, and the love of Jesus Christ to their communities.

Every gift to the Matt Henderson Legacy Fund is an investment in God's Kingdom. It enables local churches to continue reaching those who are often forgotten, offering hope to women seeking restoration, love and opportunity to children, and dignity and care to elderly men and women.

The impact of this fund extends far beyond today. It is a lasting commitment to strengthening local churches so they can faithfully proclaim the Gospel, disciple believers, care for those in need, and transform lives for generations to come.

The Matt Henderson Legacy Fund is more than a memorial—it is a living legacy of faith, compassion, and service.Through your generosity, Matt's legacy will continue to point people to Jesus by helping local churches bring hope, healing, and the love of Christ to hurting and broken women, children, and the elderly throughout the Dominican Republic.
